About The Lazy PhD

I’m a PhD student attempting to take school slower and more intentionally than I have before.

Welcome to The Lazy PhD

why did I create this space?

The idea came to me when I was traveling. I had taken time off between leaving a full time job to go back to school to be a full time student. While I’d always loved school, I also had felt very overwhelmed by it in the past. That feeling of overwhelm often came about from taking on too much and going too fast through my work. I wanted to make a space to write about my past and present experiences, so that I might work toward a calmer future.

what will I be writing about?

I created this with the intention to write about whatever I feel like with it loosely tying back to being a grad student who wants to embrace slow living. I want to write about my past and present experiences in school, in work, and in life more broadly: what I’ve experienced, what I’ve learned, and what I want to do differently going forward.

how will I be writing?

Imperfectly. The goal for me is to get the ideas down. I will definitely meander, and I will sometimes miss the point I’m trying to make.

what do I mean by “lazy”?

The more I felt overwhelmed by school and work, the more I wanted to counteract that feeling with a sense of calm. For me, I’ve repurposed the word “lazy” to mean–for me–a quality of being both attentive to and deliberate with how I spend my time. It’s a kind of slow living for the long haul. The long haul right now is working toward getting my PhD.
